Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore (1999) Dir: Mark Leckey
Short film by Turner Prize winner Leckey consists mainly of footage of people dancing in various English dancehalls, raves & nightclubs from the 70’s through to the 90’s. There’s a loose history of the styles of music that were in vogue at the various times from northern soul through to house & acid. The emphasis on the fashion labels in the middle of the video shows that even though the genres had a lasting impact and influence, they were still very much trends and fads of the time. It’s also interesting that the majority of the people in the footage, even those dancing pretty hard, are all male.
The soundtrack for the video is a great piece of sound art on it’s own and has just been released on LP in a run of 500 which was what prompted me to watch this. I don’t know if any of them have specifically cited this as an influence but the piece is definately a precursor to the ‘hauntology excavations’ done by the likes of Burial or The Caretaker who piece together the musical past to reat their music.

Ashes (2012), Dir: Apichatpong Weerasethakul
Short film shot mostly on the Lomokino camera. Really, really good. It plays to the strengths of the lomokino camera in that it mostly deals with memories, dreams, nostalgia etc. Its free to view as well, just click the image.
